In responding to President Bush's "State of The Union, " U.S. Congressional Candidate George Holland, (R), states "George Bush is accustomed to playing to 'friendly audiences' whenever he speaks. His 'State of The Union' message was no different, living in a world of fantasy, continuing to sell America on 'Staying The Course" of his Iraq War and Occupation.
Notably absent from the audience were his war critics. Highly respected Reagan administration officials and patriots, Dr. Paul Craig Roberts and Lt. Gen. Wm. Odum, U. S. Army, (Ret.) are very critical of Bush's war. In Dr. Roberts excellent article, 'How Long Can This Go On' ? (antiwar.com) He opens with, : George W. Bush is a natural born liar. He lied us into a war and now he is lying to keep us there." He closes with, "Americans may feel they cannot undercut a president at war, in which case Americans will become an embattled people consumed by decades of conflict. Americans can boot out Bush or pay dearly in blood and money.'
General Odum's articles, 'What's wrong with cutting and running?' and 'Want Stability in the Middle East? Get Out Of Iraq! should be required reading for all Americans. In the latter, Gen. Odum states, 'The invasion of Iraq may well turn out to be the greatest strategic disaster in American history. In any event, the longer we stay the worse it will be.' Also, 'To hang on to an untenable position is the height of irresponsibility. Beware of anyone , including the president, who insists this is 'responsible' or 'the patriotic' thing to do.'
Compare these statements to Bush's war hawks wanting to 'stay the course', i.e. my opponent, Rep. Mike Pence, who has said, 'This is football season', 'People want to know if we're winning or losing.......'what's the score.' " Holland continued, "Since 2002, veteran George Holland has been outspoken in opposing Bush's war, consistently calling for an immediate withdrawal of our troops.. This war is based on lies, deceit and greed and that is why Bush's war has failed and is such a tragedy of the American spirit. Why continue? Sixty % of Americans now oppose Bush's Iraq policies, notably Iraq Veterans Against [the] War, Veterans For Peace, Military Families Speak Out and other parents of American troops, i.e. U.S. Army veteran, Joe Colgan, whose son, Lt. Benjamin Colgan was KIA in Baghdad on Nov. 1, 2003".

Citing Joe Colgan's article, Holland continues, " 'The Killing Has Got To Stop' published by the Seattle Post- Intelligencer is a poignant, well written reminder of why, the longer we stay, the worse the situation becomes. Mr. Colgan not only has an excellent understanding of why the killing must stop but also the courage to speak out. Who in the media will answer Mr. Colgan's question, 'How many more Americans and Iraqis must perish or be maimed until the 'stay-the-course' approach is discredited?' "
In his closing remarks, Holland, referencing V.P. Cheney's quote 'The insurgency is in its last throes' "as another deceitful and shameful example which characterizes this administration. What has been won and for whom? Bush's policies of 'staying the course' has only resulted in an increase in violence:
--- with more terrorist and insurgency attacks upon American troops and Iraqi civilians
--- in the number of kidnappings and assassination
--- between Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites, escalating the civil war
--- with over one half of Iraqis in a recent poll openly supporting insurgency attacks upon our troops, with nine more American troops being KIA* this past week.
These were more needless deaths*, more 'blood of the innocents*' that stain not only Bush's hands, but Congress', the media and all Americans who support this war or remain apathetic and indifferent. A nuclear Armageddon becomes more and more a probability! What rational person would continue this carnage; 'God's messenger' or a psychopathic personality? Bush and Pence's war is not our American way. Bush and Pence have betrayed our trust, our Christian and American values!"
